Just follow the instructions, and you can build yourself a solid Internet business that could have you making money from home in short order. But - we thought you might also like a brief overview of the basic steps involved in setting up an online business so you know exactly what you're getting yourself into.

We're not talking about surveys or mystery shopping. Although they may be fun, they're not likely to generate enough income to let you quit your day job. But there are some shortcuts, such as online businesses that don't require you to have your own website, but that can still be quite profitable.

For example, you've no doubt heard of eBay, the online auction site that has made a lot of people a lot of money. Why not you? Registration is free, and they provide a wealth of tutorials. There's even an eBay University.

Or, if you have an offline skill - for example, graphic design or copywriting or secretarial expertise - why not sign up with one of the online freelancer agencies such as Elance.

Then, there's affiliate marketing (selling someone else's products on a commission basis). This is probably what most people mean by an 'online business,' but if committing yourself to building a website seems a bit intimidating, you can ease into affiliate marketing without one by using Chris Carpenter's get-your-feet-wet program, Google Cash.

Of course, if you're serious about making enough money to quit your day job, you'll eventually want to have your own website. Actually, creating the site is the easy part. It's a simple three-step process:

  • Pick a name for your website (called a domain name) and register it. Don't worry: the directions are right there on the website, and they're easy to follow. We have most of our websites registered with GoDaddy because it's cheap, reliable, and easy to use. But our hearts belong to Dotster. It's not the cheapest for domain registration, although it does offer very economical hosting. What we love it for, though, is its truly cool search feature, which allows you to look up fifty domain names at a time so you can find out what's available a whole lot faster.
  • Find yourself a host. This is the cyber version of a landlord. We use ThirdSphere Hosting. Quite frankly, we're not so sure we would have made it without them. This is an enormously user-friendly host, although we nearly drove them crazy with all our questions when we were getting started. They remained courteous and helpful through all the stages of our ignorance, may their reward be great in heaven! Anyway, they provide an easy-to-use site editor, website building software, even an autoresponder (to automate responses to people who sign in to your website), and plenty more, all for $24.95 a month. Plus, for a $10.00 apiece set up fee, they'll host unlimited additional domains. Or - another rather amazing option that has recently come to our attention is a host who offers, for a small up-front flat fee, lifetime hosting for unlimited domains. That's right: pay once; no monthly fees for eternity. Not bad, eh?
  • All that's left, then, is to create your website. Did we just hear you scream? Well, fear not. It's actually much easier than you may think. First of all, many webhosts (our own ThirdSphere Hosting included) offer simple site building tools that don't require any knowledge of the dreaded HTML. But - if you want to be in control (we always do), you really should learn HTML at some point. WebMonkey for Kids makes the process pretty painless. Even for adults. And it's FREE. So is the HTML Code Tutorial , which offers excellent, simple-to-follow tutorials on what you'll want to know after WebMonkey has shown you the basics.

Okay then. You know how to set up a website. But, of course, you'll need something to sell. Maybe you've already decided what that will be. If not, here are some thoughts on the matter.

But. Whatever you're selling, you'll be among about a billion other websites. Sort of like having a cubicle in the broom closet of the Empire State Building. How will anyone ever know you're there?!
